Corset #2 “Progress”

IF you are considering making a corset and IF you think you’re going to be thrifty and cut your own corset stays from a length of steel, I have one piece of advice for you.

Don’t.

I am miserable and I feel like I’m going to be working on this one project for the rest of my life.  Sometimes I can force myself to finish a project by not allowing myself to start another one without finishing the first.  The fact that I am now flat broke after my thrift-store pattern raid certainly helps.  I have already sunk a couple hours into it today and I feel like I haven’t made an inch of progress.  I also didn’t buy nearly enough corset tape, so I have to wait until I pick up my tips to pick up more.  Even more time gone!  I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself until Tuesday. . .

  1. You can do it, it will be finished, but maybe it would do you some good to set it aside for now? Cutting through the steel must be so difficult! Sewing is always a learning process, and sometimes it can be frustrating. For example, today I had to unpick sleeves I’d put into a dress because they were unsuitable for the dress, and then sew completely different sleeves and insert those, only to try the dress on again and realize that the fabric was oddly scratchy feeling and super uncomfortable and that all the work I’d done was basically a waste because it would be too uncomfortable to wear no matter what. I decided to set it aside for a day or so, to give myself time to figure out where to go from here. I know it’s not the same as the trouble you’re having with the corset, I just wanted you to know you’re not alone with the sewing frustrations. *hug* You’ve made a corset before, and you CAN do this, but maybe you need some time to just think about how to proceed with it.

    1. aww, thanks! I really needed the encouragement! And I feel you on the sleeves, nothing makes me so irrationally angry as having to undo massive amounts of work, but it WILL be worth it in the end!
