A Flash of Brilliance

I don’t know if I’ve posted this pattern on here before, but I think you can see why it’s one of my favorites.  Have you ever seen anything more 70’s than this?

I do have to take a moment to feel sorry for the guys.  In my opinion, the big pattern companies have just never hit the mark when it comes to menswear and this pattern, I think, goes to show that trend is nothing new.

I think we can all agree that this pattern is a hot, unfashionable, dangerously dated look.  I can feel the polyester grazing my skin just looking at it.  So why am I dedicating a whole post to this?  Let me tell you.

None of my guy friends were willing to take the plunge on this one, and my husband just laughed in my face before I finished asking him if he wanted it, so yesterday in a caffeine-crazed haze, I had an epiphany.  I’m going to make this thing for my damn self.

Maybe it’s the hair talking.  I have managed to keep growing my hair out, turning down the temptation to shave my head again as the temperature hear soars into triple digits.  At this point, I have a delicately feathered 70’s folk-rock look going on and the idea of wearing this jumpsuit around doesn’t seem so ridiculous.  Now all I have to do is find a suitably loud polyester fabric and we’re off!

Go for it! I JUST finished a jumpsuit for myself from a mid-1970s pattern which looks eerily similar. I do love it in a very unusual and unexpected way…it’s almost too comfy to feel appropriate to wear out. I made mine out of a stretch twill, cotton blend, it you want an idea for something not entirely man-made!

I too, asked my husband if he wanted a jumpsuit (was going to use the 1970s-inspired one that Mimi G came out with through Simplicity patterns) and before I could finish asking he gave me a quick and firm “NO!” It’s so funny. And yet my dad was big into Disco in the 70’s and tells me that he loved wearing all that stuff…platforms, jumpsuits, elephant pants. I don’t understand that!

  3. It’s delightfully horrible and I’m sure it will actually look smashing on a female figure. A guy friend of mine once had a funky pair of polyester 70s pants that he wore as part of a costume. I stole them. They looked ever so much better on me.

    1. I have discovered that 90% of looking good is just confidence. I’m worn some hot nonsense in my day, but I loved it!
